Am I a judgmental bastard or just one of the last sane persons on this planet?
by skeeter1 inso, i happened to see a young lady.
she's about 13 or 14, can't be more than 16 years old.
fresh faced, rosy cheeks, and a little pudgy.

I am almost 50 and my view of body art and piercings has changed alot since leaving "the religion". I now sport two. One is on the back of my neck, just below the hairline and is a phrase in elvish. I also have a fantasy crescent moon and stars on my right shoulder. I can show them off or hide them.
I've noticed since expanding my association with people of the world that many of these young pierced and tattooed people are intelligent, well balanced, kind, polite, and insightful. After leaving the religion I also went back to school. Many of these youngsters are college educated, even studying medicine.
My supervisor is one of them. He has tattoos and piercings and is in a band when not supervising. My baby sister is one of them. She's married, mother of two. She has tattoos and piercings, and is a tax specialist for a reputable software company.
I've discovered the same thing about older tattooed biker looking people. Many bikers are some of the most generous people you will meet.
We cannot judge books by their covers. Some of the most conservative dressed older people are the most judgemental, rude, and selfish people I've met.
My son's arms are full of tattoos. He's married, has four kids, supports his family with a good job and has served two deployments to Afghanistan. Each tattoo holds a special meaning for him.
I think different people get them for different reasons. My reasons were not the same as my sisters. My son's reasons were not the same as my brother's. Some just like them and it is like a permanent accesory. It isn't necessarily self image or rebellion for everyone.
Just some advice. IF you decide to get a tattoo, research and talk to people. Make sure your artist is awesome. Nothing will cause you more regret than a bad tattoo. My son and I have an awesome artist.

They say they are not a cult. But they are.
"Mental regulating of Jehovah"? Just another way of saying WT mind control .
Arbitrary DFing decisions:
A married elder in a congregation I attended carried on an affair for over 11 years. Not disfellowshipped. Reproved. Because he repented???
No his name wasn't King David. But the standard was the same.
My JW friend got pregnant by non-believer. She was repentant and tried to do the right thing by marrying her child's father. She was disfellowshipped.
I left the religion after I realized I just was never happy anymore. I couldn't live without joy.

My father was Catholic and my mother (though not baptized) was an active JW (approved publisher). My mother wasn't JW when she married my dad, she converted shortly after my oldest brother was born. Her parents and siblings all joined the religion.
This was hard on my father, who was also hispanic. He was a church going Knights of Columbus Catholic. He did not allow my mother to teach us her new religion. He took all of us to church by himself and raised us Catholic.
Their marriage did work, for 16 years. They broke up later for other reasons. But I think the biggest reason it worked is because my father truly loved my mother and my mom was not a militant hard nosed JW. Both are non-confrontational by nature.

Anyone recall a time when your congregation came to the aid of a Brother or sister in need??
by jam ini'm not talking about a individual, but a congregation as a whole.. i'm talking about a brother or sister that really hit hard times.. have there ever been an occasion where the brothers (elders).

Uh no! Not as a congregation.
Elders and pioneers might visit folks in the hospital or something.
Some individual members would help other individual members. And my husband (former elder) and I (former pioneer) helped and were helped. We were "in" for 18 years, but we lived paycheck to paycheck on little more than minimum wage.
Sort of reminds me of the quote from Thomas More's "Utopia". Though not thieves and not being punished ... seems the WT religion condemns higher education and materialism, so that their members end up poorly educated, living on low income, required to own dress clothes for meetings, use a car for field service, and then when they end up in need ... condemn them further for not providing for their families.

He gave the dedication talk at the new KH in Harlingen TX in 1983. My husband and I were studying then. At first, I had no idea who this tiny elderly man from WT HQ was. Then one of the elders spelled it out for us and we understood what all the excitement was about.
I remember being told he spoke eight languages and was a Rhodes Scholar.
After the meeting the person who conducted our bible studies took us to meet him. He was just a friendly elderly man. We greeted him, he greeted us, we shook hands, said we enjoyed his talk, he said thank you. And that was about it.
Nothing extraordinary.
More interesting than him was an elder in a congregation we were in later, in San Antonio TX. Rudolf Graichen was a holocaust survivor. I believe he is still alive and in the area. I remember he always wore a bow tie to the meetings.

Music - Eagles, KISS, Godsmack, Mushroom Head, any Rapper (except Will Smith - he's great, but not obscene.)
Movies - Anything rated R and above, especially if it is also supernatural in nature. List Zombie Stippers and Jennifer's Body.
Books - Jim Butcher's "Harry Dresden's Files". Harry is a wizard in Chicago who helps a female cop solve supernatural crimes. And of course "Crisis of Conscience".
TV Shows - Sons of Anarchy, Supernatural, and Reno 911
Inspirational People - Charles Darwin, Raymond Franz, Scott Cunningham, Friedrich Nietzche
Religion - Pastafarian (Church of the Flying Spagetti Monster), Wiccan, Atheist. Or heck, list your religion as JW, especially with all of the above.
Politics - Anything other than neutral.

My husband loves me more in the bad wife role. I don't do any of those things.
Oh wait! It isn't the 50s and I am not Mormon.

When I was in, I was spoiled. We attended in Houston TX ... in the ASTRODOME!!! We had to walk a couple of miles from parking to The Dome. Then we had to walk some more up the ramps to our assigned area. I always wore comfortable flats and I don't mind walking at all.
Other than that, we sat in AC comfort with excellent sound to hear every word. Since my hubby was a servant and always had a job and I was got cleaning detail, we were always there early and left late. So we managed to avoid the parking lot arrival/departure rush hour.
We were married in the summer so we spent a few anniversaries at the convention. The years we didn't, we never had vacation time or money left over do do anything for ourselves.
Glad those days are over.
